I think there are lots of tensions around how we think of the early years and this reflects, perhaps, the lack of a shared sense in Britain of what childcare is for and how we want the early years to be for children. In policy terms, I think this stems from Britain only developing policies around this in the 90s, under New Labour, and there childcare was mostly conceptualised as clearing an obstacle to paid work. The current policy seems to pull together a range of concerns and comes out with policies that don't serve children, childcare workers, or parents well.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01810477640692272465noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5169975129697093014.post-66676867787257385712013-04-22T21:24:53.490+01:002013-04-22T21:24:53.490+01:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01810477640692272465noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5169975129697093014.post-57261942991699748252013-04-22T18:27:00.415+01:002013-04-22T18:27:00.415+01:00Thank you for this post... I applaud the caring and responsive attitudes of the nursery workers who look after my daughter, and find it hard to believe that increased academic achievement could improve my daughter's experience of her time in their care. Also, and perhaps controversially, I find the dominant discourse of what a 'well-behaved' child looks like to be more than mildly disturbing.

Thank you again for these insights.Rachel Casonnoreply@blogger.com
